IONE is an author, playwright and director whose seminal work, Pride of Family; Four Generations of American Women of Color, has been published as a Classic by Doubleday/Broadway Books. (October 2004) This memoir is a New York Times Notable Book, and was on the New York Public Library’s List of 25 Books to Remember.  

 

Other works by Ione include Listening in Dreams, Deep Listening Press 2005 This is a Dream; a Handbook for Deep Dreamers, MOM Press, 2000,The Coffee Table Lover, 1986 Piramida Negra; Collected Poems from 1971-1991,1991 The Night Train to Aswan, 1996 Ione’s Diaries were published in American Women’s Diaries 1830s-1970s, Ballantine Books 1986. Her first published fiction appeared in 1957 in Arcadie; Revue Litteraire, a magazine launched by Jean Cocteau and others in Paris.     

 

IONE’S is writer and director of Dreams of the Jungfrau with Music and  Sound Design by Pauline Oliveros.  Jungfrau  is a 20 minute Experimental short which premiered in New York City in October of 2007 at the Emily Harvey Foundation. It will next be shown in Cork, Ireland at the Quiet Music Festival on July 6, 2008.   

 

IONE is also an improvising Spoken Word performer who specializes in experimental narrative forms. She has performed and collaborated with artists at festivals and venues in numerous cities and countries throughout the world, including New York, Paris, Marseille, Brussels, Granada, Seville, Austria, New Brunswick, Montreal, Auckland, NZ , Brisbane and Melbourne Australia. She sent her text and voice to the surface of the moon in 1998 as a part of composer Pauline Oliveros’ Echoes from the Moon.

 

IONE was the Director and Playwright of Njinga The Queen King; The  Return of a Warrior with Music and Sound Design by Pauline Oliveros which premiered at  BAM's Next Wave Festival in 1993.  Njinga’s performances include : Yellow Springs Institute, PA, Walker Arts Center, Red Eye Theater, Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon, Lincoln Center Out of Doors’95, Folger Shakespeare Theater , Washington, DC, ’96, Prince George Publick Playhouse, ’97, Mills College, ’98.  This work is forthcoming in 2008 on DVD from Mode Records.  She was the Director and author of the Story Line for Oliveros’ The Lunar Opera ; Deep Listening For_Tunes , Premiere; Lincoln Center , August, 2000 .  She was Director and Librettist of Io  and Her and the Trouble with Him- A Dance Opera in Primeval Time.  Music and Sound Design by Pauline Oliveros. Premiere: Union Theater University of Wisconsin, in April, 2001. ( Io is currently available on DVD). Ione was the Director of  Library of Maps by Moira Roth at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, NY,in April 2002.   She has lectured at numerous Universities and other venues and was a visiting Professor at Mills College in 1998.    IONE is also a counselor and spiritual teacher whose work focuses on dreams, heritage and women’s issues. She is the Director of the Ministry of Maåt, Inc. an organization specializing in women’s spirituality and creativity with goals of supporting the concept of world harmony and balance. She has been the Artistic Director of Deep Listening Institute, Ltd. since 1995.
